It is estimated that epilepsy affects close to 50 million people worldwide. Those numbers equal more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and Parkinson's disease combined. An estimated 50,000 deaths occur each year in the United States from seizure-related causes, this includes accidental deaths and SUDEP. Funding for epilepsy has and is still, historically under-funded, with very few federal funds being allocated to the cause. Therefore, an urgent need to research a cure for epilepsy, specifically SUDEP, is evident.
